Largest Muslim educational institution after AMU

Muslims in India, despite their educational, social and economic backwardness, have always been active to safeguard their moral and sacred values and culture. This was made possible only with the virtuous passion and righteous thinking of those sacred souls who devoted their whole life for revival of Islamic values and dissemination of its cultural heritage. Among these sanctified personalities, the name of Allama Shibli Nomani is of great importance. His scholarly and original writings brought him world fame at a very young age. Among the various books authored by him, Seeratun-Nabi, the biograpgy of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is of immense value and has been translated into leading languages of the world. The Arabic translation of the first part of this great work was done by late Prof. Muhammad Ismail Madrasi of Algiers University. Other parts are being translated by Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan. Soon it will be published. Allama Shibli's other books include Al-Farooq, Seeratun-Nu’man, Al-Mamoon, Seerat Al-Ghazali and Mowazana Anees-o-Dabeer. He used his high level writings to defend Islam against the blasphemous writings of Arab-American historian Jurji Zaidan.
Shibli National Post-Graduate College (SNPGC) is a minority (Muslim) institution of higher education. The college is affiliated to Puruvanchal University. It is the largest Muslim educational institution in the country after Aligarh Muslim University. The SNPGC is run by Azamgarh Muslim Education Society which consists of the cream of the intelligentsia in Azamgarh and people of Azamgarh origin in other parts of the country. The current president of the society is Alhaj Abu Saleh Ansari, a prominent businessman of Mumbai and the secretary of the society is Qamar Rasheed Khan, a noted industrialist who tirelessly devotes his time and energy to promote the college. The college has been served over the years by great educationists who established its strong academic character. Late Basheer Ahmad Siddiqui was the first principal of the college. He was followed by late Shaukat Sultan Baig who served the college selflessly for 28 years. The current principal is Dr Iftekhar Ahmad.
Allama Shibli Nomani used his potentials and resources to highlight Islamic values and culture and tried to revive the past glory of Islam. He urged the Muslim Ummah to revive the same glorious heritage that was once the identity of their ancestors. For that purpose he initiated the Nadwatul Ulama movement with full enthusiasm and played a dominant role to make the Nadwatul Ulama an ideal place for learning. At his own native place, Azamgarh, Allama Shibli established a research institution of eminence known as "Darul-Musannifeen" for research, educational training and upliftment of the new generation so as to promote Islamic culture and values and prepare scholars who could defend Islam against the writings of orientalists. Today, Darul-Musannifeen is a leading and unique institution of its kind and famous for its services in the country and abroad. In 1883, Allama Shibli laid the foundation of "National School" at Azamgarh, which gradually developed into a high school in 1916, an intermediate college in 1942, a degree college in 1946, and finally it became a postgraduate college in1970. The college played an active part in the freedom struggle and its complex witnessed the activities of great freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Motilal Nehru, Madan Mohan Malviya, Sarojni Naidu and Jawaharlal Nehru.Today this college functions like a university, providing a variety of modern higher education. It includes faculties of Science, Arts, Humanities, Commerce, Law, Education, Military Science and Computer Sciences, all situated within a single, sprawling campus spread over 29 acres. It has a teachers training department for the educational training of teachers. In addition, the college has an advance Computer Centre providing computer education to students. Recently a girls’ ITI has been started to provide job-oriented technical training to women in the areas of typing and secretarial skills, embroidery and cutting/tailoring etc. This college is a renowned place of learning with a minority (Muslim) character and follows the pattern of Aligarh Muslim University to serve as a torchbearer and beacon for the country in general, and Muslims in particular. Although the college has not yet received the status of a ‘university’, keeping in mind the variety of services it provides, time is not far when it will achieve this position.Further development of the college is in progress. The need of a medical college and an engineering college is inevitable and we want to establish these two colleges as soon as possible. A residential hostel for students is also under consideration where students will enjoy a highly academic atmosphere and Islamic discipline.Over fourteen thousand students are enrolled in the college at present. A staff of hundreds of teaching and non-teaching personnel is engaged with sincerity and zeal in providing the best available education. We hope very soon the college will get the status of Shibli National University, as a renowned seat of learning. q
